Research peptides FAQ
Encyclopedia-level UK answers on research peptide regulation, purity, and safety. Marked up with FAQPage schema for AI search. We do not publish dosing or human-use protocols.
Are research peptides legal in the UK?
Most named research peptides (BPC-157, MOTS-c, ipamorelin, TB-500) are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 or scheduled under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. They are legal to sell when marketed as research chemicals without health claims. Selling the same molecule with therapeutic claims turns it into an unlicensed medicinal product, which is illegal under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
What does "research use only" mean?
It is the regulatory framing that keeps research peptides outside the medicines tier. Products are sold without health claims, not for human or animal consumption, intended for laboratory use. UK retailers operate under this framing because making a medicinal claim triggers MHRA enforcement.
What does "99% HPLC purity" mean?
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography measures the proportion of the named peptide in a sample. 99% pure means the named peptide is at least 99% of the peptide content. It does not prove biological activity, sterility, or correct dosing. A sample can be 99% pure of the wrong molecule.
What is a CoA?
Certificate of Analysis. A document from a third-party lab confirming the identity and purity of a chemical sample. Some retailers include CoAs by default; others provide on request. CoAs are not a sterility certificate.
Are research peptides on the WADA prohibited list?
Several are. BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, ipamorelin, sermorelin, tesamorelin, melanotan are all prohibited for tested athletes. Epitalon is not currently listed.
Why are there no human RCTs on BPC-157?
No company has funded the phase II and III trials needed for a UK or US marketing authorisation. The animal data is supportive but does not translate to clinical use without trials. Funding has stayed off the table because there is no patentable IP angle.
Has the MHRA enforced against research peptide sellers in the UK?
Yes, and at increasing pace. £45m of trafficked weight-loss medicines and "peptide products" were seized in early 2026. Northampton (Oct 2025), Sleaford (2026), and other UK locations have been raided.
What about Melanotan?
Melanotan II is the highest-enforcement-risk peptide. The MHRA has issued multiple public warnings and Trading Standards has prosecuted UK sellers. Sale for human use is illegal in the UK. We do not link to retailers from the Melanotan encyclopedia entry.
Are research peptides safe?
No human safety data exists for most. Adverse effects in humans are largely unknown beyond anecdotal reports. We do not publish dosing or human-use protocols.
Can I import research peptides from outside the UK?
UK Border Force and HMRC seize peptide imports regularly. Importing under "personal use" framing is not a reliable shield.
